Job Summary: The primary responsibility of the Switchboard Operator is to answer incoming phone calls on the Agency’s telephone system and route them to the person or department needed to properly address the caller on the other end of the line; take messages for and monitor schedules of medical/clinical staff. Other duties may include but are not limited to: act as receptionist for consumers and control traffic flow between consumers and physicians; make appointments and keep daily schedules accurate, perform cashier duties, handle accounts for consumers, collect fees and payment information from consumers. Reports to Customer Services Supervisor.

Qualifications: Employee must have knowledge of telephone consoles and related equipment. Basic data entry and word processing skills. Customer service; verbal and interpersonal skills. Ability to handle difficult or irate callers. Ability to resolve problems. High school diploma/GED is required for this position. Employee must demonstrate ability to recognize consumers’ individual needs based on medical conditions, age (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young adults, middle-aged and geriatric), limitations and planned procedures. This position has been determined to have an occasional or very low risk of occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
